NOTE: A train is a form of rail transport consisting of a series of connected vehicles that usually runs along a rail track to transport cargo or passengers. Motive power is provided by a separate locomotive or individual motors in self-propelled multiple units. Although historically steam propulsion dominated, the most common modern forms are diesel and electric locomotives, the latter supplied by overhead wires or additional rails. Other energy sources include horses, engine or water-driven rope or wire winch, gravity, pneumatics, batteries, and gas turbines. Train tracks usually consist of two running rails, sometimes supplemented by additional rails such as electric conducting rails and rack rails, with a limited number of monorails and maglev guideways in the mix.

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) has made another spectacular minute-minute documentary film, this time recording Norway's northernmost railway connects Trondheim and Bodø. We have recorded it four times - once for each season, giving truly unique footage of this ten-hour ride.

This machine of the Canadian Pacific Railway has an airplane jet engine mounted on a flat-bed truck. It is primarily used to thaw frozen switches in the winter time. Here it is at Lake Louise thawing snow left on snowplow 400840 after the latter had been used to punch through avalanches in the Kicking Horse Pass near Partridge and Cathedral sidings the night before. The snow could not be left to melt on its own on the plow because it was suffering from an air leak affecting its pneumatic mechanism moving the wings in and out. Melted snow which refroze in the mechanism could disable it. Normally the procedure shown here is not performed.

The hot exhaust from the jet engine can be steered to a degree by the movable air funnel placed behind it. The engine produces 140 decibels of noise. If one is standing beside it one must wear double ear protection: plugs and ear muffs. If one only has ear plugs one can only come to within 100 feet of it as the noise level is already at 120 decibels at that point. The crewman told me that this is the only operating unit on the CPR. A second unit exists in Calgary, but is not operational at this time.

With the mist lifting on a warm still morning we catch the first train on the last operating day of 2015. The train crew are very friendly; keen we should enjoy their railway on this wonderful autumn day. We start climbing through autumn gold woods with shafts of sunshine breaking through the leaf cover creating an almost magical atmosphere, before passing through a series of tunnels, between which the line is perched on a narrow ledge, with occasional stunning views over the lake far below. We pass the tree line onto the rugged mountainside for more dramatic vistas across deep valleys and snow covered peaks. Take a seat and enjoy one of the most outstanding rides in Switzerland.

Train action along with rotary's clearing the snow bank on upper Donner Pass, Feb 25th, 2017. Union Pacific finally gets to test their newly re-built rotary #207 on Donner Pass from Cisco to Norden after the record wet winter of 2017. Most of the testing done was clearing the 8+ foot high drifts that were on both sides of the right of way in different areas. We had several stack trains as well as the flanger and Amtrak 5 & 6 hold up the rotary as well as some electrical issues when they left Emigrant Gap at about 6am. By the time they reached us at Troy at noon, they were moving quite swiftly and we later heard the unit performed beautifully. They managed to tackle their goal in 1 day and that evening took it back to Roseville. On a rather overcast spring morning diesel Locomotives 47643 & 37703 (masquerading as 37067) were preparing to depart from the Bo'ness signal box when my morning was made much brighter when invited to join the 47643 locomotive crew on a cab ride trip up line to Manuel Junction near ,Whitecross, Falkirk, to bring back Luxury train the Belmond Royal Scotsman which had arrived late the previous evening .I would also like to thank the Bo'ness Diesel group crew Lindsay,Ross and Lewis for both of my cab rides on locos 47643 uphill & 37703 down hill and giving me the opportunity to film the journey from Bo'ness to Manuel and back.
